Study of Sue Oil on Canvas 2013

Painting and print available

I was born in Bradford, West Yorkshire in 1941. I studied commercial design at The Bradford College of Art from 1957 to 1961. During this period I took a studio in the centre of Bradford, painting in the evenings and at weekends. This led to gaining a place at The Royal College of Art between 1961 and 1964.

I then foolishly co founded 'Binder Edwards and Vaughan' with two ex students from Bradford College. We were termed 'The Underground Design Group', winning commissions from the glitterati of the sixties in London. After the dissolution of the design group, I determined to return to painting, which at this stage took on a very pronounced graphic style. It did however lead to solo shows at The Whitechapel Art Gallery, then subsequently shows in Chicago and Minneapolis. They were very successful commercially, although my dealer was to question my loosening of style which then led to a friendly parting of ways.

At this stage I was offered part-time Art College teaching work in London and the south. Then in 1985 along with a number of Bradford College students and staff, I ran the exhibition programme at South Square Gallery in Thornton, Bradford. After cutting my teeth for three years curating on a voluntary basis, I persuaded Dean Clough Mills in Halifax to take me on as founding curator of the galleries.

My present role after nearly twenty five years as curator, is now 'Painter in Residence', where I have a small studio attached to the galleries. All my paintings now depict the life models from the life class. A permanent weekly session is held in the new life room in Dean Clough.
